Choosing the Correct Torque Converter for Your Truck
For the maximum performance for your diesel truck equipped with an automatic transmission, it is imperative that the torque converter be matched to the truck, engine, and primary purpose.
Beginning with the CNC machined billet cover to the trapezoidal designed clutch disc and billet radial pull stator, Sun Coast retains the designing and manufacturing of the torque converters we offer in house. Because of the different power and torque curves of the different engines, the converter configuration for a 1998 Dodge Cummins 12 valve may not be the same for a 2003 Cummins 24 valve, just as the formula for a 7.3 liter PowerStroke would be different from the one for a 6.6 liter Dura-max.
One design does not fit all. Aftermarket custom torque converters can be very costly when compared to factory or rebuilt converters. When you choose a torque converter for your truck, some of the variables you should consider are:
The reputation and history of the company, do they offer more than one model? Do they ask the right questions about the truck and your intended use? When you call Sun Coast we would like to know the “profile” of the truck. Year, make, Model, present and future power upgrades, axle ratio, tire size, and primary purpose. We want to deliver the ultimate product to you.
Stall Torque Ratios and efficiency ratings of a particular torque converter may be completely different in one truck than it is in another. Make sure you understand what STR and efficiency percentages mean when applied to your application.
Sun Coast offers some general guide lines and part numbers for your consideration.
Recommended Application:
Because of the endless combinations of turbo, turbo housings, gear ratios, tire size, and engine tunes, these are meant to be general guidelines only. They are provided to aid you in choosing the correct product for your application. We encourage your participation and allowing us to answer any questions you may have.
